Huge number of toddlers’ car seats unsafe

Almost three-quarters of parents are risking the safety of their children in badly-fitted or too small car seats, shocked Trading Standards officers have found.

A survey of parents with toddlers parking at four supermarkets in Wiltshire found that of the 173 who had their car seats inspected, a staggering 124 could fail in the event of an accident.

Drivers with badly fitted seats were shown how to make them safe by independent experts who had teamed up with Wiltshire Council’s trading standards department.

“Many of the problems related to buckles not being in the right place or twisted straps, while several car seats were found not to be compatible with the car,” said in-car safety seat specialist Cathy Lyons, of V & C Consultants.
